The HMC-20 is a flexible, multifunctional, graphical HMI board that is suitable for further expanding the communication interfaces with an expansion card*. The choice of a hardware split enables reusability of the graphics card for multiple applications. Both boards communicate through a real-time serial command interpreter, which makes it possible to quickly develop new applications by designing the applications via an FTDI cable before additional hardware is developed.

The solution aims to reduce complexity by splitting the graphic part from the application part. The graphical layout can be captured using a json file and images (bmp/jpg) loaded from the SD flash card into a flash memory chip. The graphics controller can then read the chip directly using DMA (Direct Memory Access) to speed up the loading of images via the SPI bus. The memory chip is also used to store internal parameters such as a PIN code or a user setting.

* The expansion card will be available soon. It will contain Ethernet, RS485, CAN, USB, Analog + Digital IO and a Mikrobus(R) interface.
